If you want to learn something, read about it; if you want to understand something, write about it; if you want to master something, teach it."

I have many jobs but the one I'm most passionate about and wish I could do full time is teach Kundalini Yoga, as taught by Yogi Bhajan. I am also a Registered Nurse and Distributor of Young Living Essential Oils, I believe in wellness but the apparent juxtaposition of wellness and health challenges me daily.

Update on 11/11/11, The Age of Aquarius.

Yogi Bhajan. He came to this country in 1969 and started teaching Kundalini Yoga, a type of yoga that had never been publicly taught before. He could see that many changes were coming that were associated with the shift to the Aquarian Age, and it was time for people to have the tools they would need to transition from the Piscean Age that we had been in for 2000 years, into this new age.
What are these ages? Astronomers will tell you that the Earth rotates on an axis and that this line going through the center of the earth has a slight wobble to it. It goes through a little circular wobble about once every 24,000 years. This cycle has been broken into 12 parts associated with the 12 astrological signs, based on which constellation the axis is wobbling towards. From around 2000 B.C. to 0 A.D. we were in the Age of Taurus. From 0 A.D. to the present we have been in the Age of Pisces. For the next 2000 years we will be in the Aquarian Age. We have been in the transition from the Piscean Age to the Aquarian Age for the last 50 years. The official beginning of the Aquarian Age is November 11, 2011 or 11/11/11. Some people have set this date as December 21, 2012. Considering that this is a 2000 year cycle, no matter which date you accept, we are in for lots of change in the near future!
Why is this so important? Many people go their whole lives not caring or knowing if they are a Pisces, or a Gemini, or what their moon or rising sign is. This change to the Aquarian age is so important because it changes the astrological conditions for the entire planet. Every person on planet Earth has been and will be affected by this shift. Let’s investigate what will be changing.
The Piscean Age has been dominated by hierarchy, and power. The key phrase for this age was from Shakespeare’s Hamlet, “To be or not to be.” To make a successful and happy life, you needed to resolve this question. The key to the astrological sign Pisces is “I believe.” During this age, in order for you “to be,” you needed to find someone or something to believe in. When you found that thing, you attached yourself to that thing and were guided how to live. This could be a religion, a political ideology, a charismatic leader, work, etc. The keys to life were hidden and secret in the halls of power and in the monasteries and ashrams. But you didn’t need to know these secrets, only to follow leaders and guides who did. This created vertical hierarchies as a result, and it was essential to find your place in the pecking order.
This has been the foundation for human consciousness for the past 2000 years. Everything that you have learned from your parents, and they from their parents, going back 2000 years, has been colored by this Piscean frame of reference. And now that is all changing.
The Aquarian Age will be dominated by networks, and information. The key phrase for this age is “Be to be.” The key to the astrological sign Aquarius is “I know.” This is the age of information. Nothing is secret anymore. All information is available at your fingertips. Where the Piscean age was organized in a vertical, up and down structure of hierarchies, the Aquarian Age is organized in a horizontal network, opening the world up to true equality. During this age, the focus is no longer on your identity and existence (“to be or not to be”), but on accepting yourself as a whole person (“be to be”) who does not need to believe in something outside of yourself. You are ready to accept that you have the knowledge and wisdom within yourself. It is no longer necessary to attach to something outside yourself, but to become a leader of one: yourself. Instead of being a railroad car that is pulled by an engine, you become your own engine. It is your responsibility to stay on the tracks and to keep moving forward.
With this understanding, it is easier to comprehend what has been happening in the world over the last 50 years. On the inner level, since the 1960’s, there has been a huge movement towards personal transformation: self awareness, self improvement, yoga, meditation, tai chi, alternative healing, natural foods, etc. There has also been a major increase in depression, suicide, anxiety, stress, and drug use, both pharmaceutical and recreational.
In the outer world, we have seen amazing changes: civil rights, environmental consciousness, women’s rights, gay rights, global consciousness, etc. We have also seen the rise of fundamentalism, terrorism, partisan politics, racism, xenophobia (the fear of the “other”), and general fear mongering.
This shift is bringing out the best and the worst in mankind. Some people are preparing for this shift by opening their hearts and minds and embracing this new age, and some people are intimidated by the changes that they don’t understand and want to return to a “golden age” in the past, or to circle the wagons and trust only those who are like themselves.
Transformation is never a painless process. When you fast or cleanse to purify your body, at first you feel worse, because toxins get stirred up in order to be eliminated. Once these poisons have been cleared, you feel lighter and more energized. Now imagine that every person on planet Earth is going through this shift. We are heading into a time of radical change. It is a time of great potential growth and expansion, but it is also a time of great potential pain and suffering. The more that you understand what is happening, the more that you can go through all of the changes without losing your balance and stability.
What can you do to help make this transition into this new age of information and consciousness? Here are some suggestions:
1. Have a daily spiritual practice. Every spiritual tradition has one thing in common: a daily practice. This can be many different things: yoga, meditation, chanting, prayer, contemplation, exercise, journaling, etc. It is not important what you are doing, but that you do something almost every day, and do it with an intention to let go of your blocks and focus your consciousness. Kundalini yoga and meditation are the most powerful tools that I have found, but everyone must find their own pathway and collect the tools for their own toolbox.
2. Don’t give in to fear, despair, or anger. There is so much happening that can trigger these emotions: the media, the environment, politics, terrorism, etc. If you understand that these emotions are all symptoms of the Aquarian shift, then you can go through them without losing your center.
3. Don’t be a victim. You have the power to change your life. Don’t give that power away to anyone through blame or resentment. You are responsible for your happiness and grace. Don’t buy into any view of reality in which you are not 100% responsible for making your life work. The Aquarian Age is all about empowerment and consciousness.
4. Be a source of light. The more people who consciously choose to embrace the Aquarian shift, the easier this transformation will go for humanity. It is a spiritual truth that a small percentage of people who have shifted their consciousness can influence the rest of humanity. If you are reading this, then you are most likely one of these pioneers. Find a way to spread your light: teach, heal, create community networks, serve, sacrifice, love. Welcome to the Aquarian Age!

Yoga for all

Sat nam Everyone,
I had the thought that I needed to go on a retreat to reconnect with my spiritual practice, to recommit to my daily Sadhana, to stop eating junk food, etc, you get the idea and this morning as I was bemoaning the fact that I don't have the money for such an endeavor right now, I had a sudden realization that my need to go somewhere else is what's blocking me from reconnecting with my inner being and it's what's stopping me from doing my Sadhana. Sometimes it's the search that obscures us from the truth, it is in seeking that we get lost. So I decided to stop. I got up and did Sadhana, took class with my dear friend and fellow Kundalini teacher, Reina, and haven't eaten anything unhealthy yet today.
That's it. No mystery. No seeking. No doing. Just be.

The Age of Aquarius.

Save the date 11-11-11, Special Event at Shakti in Maplewood, to joyously make the shift to the Aquarian Age

This is an article from the 3HO website.

“The time has come not to search for God, but to be God. Time is not to worship God, but to trust and dwell in the working God." ~Yogi Bhajan
The Aquarian Age is dawning. The final cusp ends on November 11, 2011. There are many dimensions to the radical shift of this Age. People everywhere are talking about it, making predictions or debunking it. Some sense the shift as a cataclysm or end of the world, others as a new beginning, and still others as a time of uncertainty and unpredictability.1
We have always experienced change, but rarely with this intensity and speed and never with this scope and vastness. This change is radical, not incremental. It is a simultaneous change in both outer and inner worlds. The mind is changing its sensitivity, its basic frequency and functioning. Our lifestyle is changing its sense of time, space, relatedness, and relevancy.1
Five Sutras for the Aquarian Age by Yogi Bhajan
1. Recognize that the other person is you.
2. There is a way through every block.
3. When the time is on you, start, and the pressure will be off.
4. Understand through compassion or you will misunderstand the times.
5. Vibrate the Cosmos. The Cosmos shall clear the path.

Piscean to Aquarian Age

In the Piscean Age that we are leaving behind, it was a central and even sacred task to find and gain access to the right information. The motto of the age was “to be or not to be.” Learn, grow, and become something. Great knowledge about human potential was guarded by secrecy and layers of initiations. The Piscean Age was dominated by machines and hierarchies. As the Aquarian Age dawns, the old defenses and manipulations based on hiding and controlling access to information will no longer work.1
The new Aquarian Age is ruled by awareness, information, and energy. In the Aquarian Age there are no secrets! Information is available. Finding it is not the central task any longer. In this Age, the motto is “be to be.” Real value will come from truth embodied in practical actions and in the internal caliber and qualities of your mind and heart. The greatest power will be your Word – your consciously projected words.1

“The time has come of self-value. And the question is not: ‘To be or not to be;’ the statement is: ‘To be to be. I am, I am.’ The time has come not to search for God, but to be G.O.D.” ~Yogi Bhajan

The Character of the aquarian Age1

• Intellect is not enough. We need a new relationship to intuition, emotion, and instinct.
• Information is not enough. Neither is knowledge. We need wisdom.
• Learning is not enough. We must learn how to learn.
• Complexity is increasing as is our need to deal with it.
• This is an age of paradox – more global and more individual with fewer boundaries and more demand for political separations.
• Everything is faster and we have less time. We need far more love and unity for we have more fear and tremendous insecurity.
• We require a reconciliation and integration of the spiritual side of life with the technological and material sides – a spiritual fitness to sense values and meaning.
• There is no isolation. Each action we take must be considered ecologically and globally because each person does affect, directly or indirectly, vast networks of people and other living beings and places.
• Change and learning is continuous and life-long. We must maintain mental, emotional, and physical flexibility.
• Stamina and constant peak performance are the common benchmarks to evaluate all people and their work, and the need is to go inward and regenerate.

Tools for the aquarian age

We do not need new choices. We are flooded with choices. We need an elevated capacity to make choices. We do not need more information. We need the wisdom to use all the information. We do not need another religion. We need the experience of a dharma that creates the spiritual fitness to act believably on our beliefs. 1
There is the need for a potent and practical technology to generate the inner energy needed to survive and excel under the pressure of more information, more choices, more contacts, and more complexity. Now the time has come that you will need a meditative mind to wait and see what comes to you.1
Kundalini Yoga as Taught by Yogi Bhajan® provides the tools and technology to maintain a meditative mind, to process input, and respond from a neutral, compassionate vantage. Kundalini Yoga gives you you in this new Aquarian Age.

White tantric yoga is coming to New York City

Sat nam,
I'm have not been prioritizing my blog but that doesn't seem to be negatively impacting my classes, which thankfully have been very well attended. As a teacher is such a gift to have these teachings to share. It's like owning a recipe that draws people back to your restaurant again and again. As we look around our globe and witness all that's happening, all the change, the turmoil, the loss and the suffering we may think there's nothing we can do but that's not the case. We can pray and meditate and bear witness to the suffering of others. We can keep out hearts open to what is and embrace the changes while doing everything in our power to relieve the suffering around us. Right now the 3HO organization has mobilized thousands of us to meditate to Ra Ma Da Sa, please go to their website for more details or find it on my facebook page.

Next month, April 9th, here in New York city we will have the opportunity to practice White Tantric Yoga, it is a day of powerful meditations, chanting and group consciousness. This is an accelerator for personal growth and change. I hope to see some of you there. You don't even need to have taken kundalini yoga before to do white tantric yoga.

Now I must return to my studies. I'm back at school studying psychology so I'm not sure when I'll be able to blog again but it is my goal to report back on the events of White Tantric Yoga day in NYC.

Much love and light, peace and blessings to all, especially my dear friends in Japan.
Sat nam.

What is Kundalini Yoga

I get asked all the time what is Kundalini yoga and how is it different from other forms of yoga and for years now I’ve been trying to come up with a catchy, one-liner that explains what I’m so passionate about and every time I think I’ve got it, something’s missing.

I finally realised that words are never enough and to know Kundalini is to experience Kundalini. There are no words or too many words to describe it.

It is for the beginner and the expert, it is gentle at times and physically demanding at times, it is both at the same time. It is meditative and dynamic. It is nurturing and provocative. It is the essence of Yoga, union of mind, body and soul but it is of this world, where we have to manage hectic lives and schedules and deal with copious amounts of stress. It is my coping mechanism. It is my tool for focusing, being happy, being grounded, being centered for my children. I replace the chaos of my mind with the mantra of Kundalini yoga and I know peace. I’m a better mother, a better wife, a better friend, a better teacher, a better employee. It has helped me deal with a variety of physical ailments, I routinely have students come in with ailments from head colds and allergies to chronic ailments such as back pain and arthritis and watch the almost immediate healing effects of Kundalini. It teaches me to let go of judgement and to release my attachment to outcome.

When I think about my own experience of Kundalini I feel such gratitude in my heart towards Yogi Bhajan, for bringing this ancient science to the United States, to my husband for finding it, to myself for committing to it and to Shakti and Terra Sky for embracing it.

“Laugh because that is your purpose in life, love because that is what you came here for, Shine because it is important. Share because it is demanded of you.” Yogi Bhajan.
